Introduction

William Tanuwijaya is an Indonesian technology entrepreneur best known as the co-founder of Tokopedia.

His story started far from Jakarta’s business circles. He grew up in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra. Money was limited. Business connections were limited too.

Then his life changed.

William moved to Jakarta for university. During college, he worked long night shifts at an internet café. That job gave him something valuable: regular access to the internet.

Years later, that experience mattered.

He and Leontinus Alpha Edison started working on the idea behind Tokopedia. Raising money was tough. William spent about two years pitching potential investors before the business got its chance.

Tokopedia publicly launched in 2009. It later attracted investment from major names including East Ventures, SoftBank, Sequoia Capital and other large investors. Tokopedia then joined Gojek in 2021 to form GoTo Group.

William eventually left his day-to-day leadership roles. His Tokopedia and GoTo positions ended in 2024. He has since appeared publicly as an angel investor, including in Indonesian AI startup Bythen’s 2025 funding round.

Early Life in North Sumatra

William Tanuwijaya was born in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra, Indonesia, in 1981.

He came from a modest family.

William later recalled that his father and uncle wanted him to have better opportunities. So they sent him to Jakarta to continue his education.

It was a big move.

He travelled from Belawan Port in North Sumatra to Jakarta by ship. The journey took around four days and three nights.

He was still very young.

Jakarta exposed William to opportunities that were harder to find in his hometown. Products, information, education and technology were easier to access.

That difference stayed with him.

Years later, the gap between Indonesia’s big cities and smaller communities became part of the thinking behind Tokopedia. William wanted technology to help people get better access to products and business opportunities regardless of where they lived.

Education at BINUS University

William studied computing at Bina Nusantara University, commonly known as BINUS.

GoTo’s official corporate records state that he received a Bachelor of Computer Science from Bina Nusantara University in 2003.

BINUS also identifies William as one of its successful alumni and links his academic background to information technology.

His own public professional profile lists his bachelor’s studies from 1999 to 2003.

Years later, he also listed Executive Education in Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School in 2017. This was executive education rather than a Harvard university degree.

Working Night Shifts at an Internet Café

College was not easy financially.

William’s father became seriously ill. William needed income, so he found work at an internet café.

His shift was unusual.

He worked overnight.

In a 2015 interview, William said he worked from around 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. during his remaining university years.

The job was exhausting.

But there was another side.

William could access the internet freely while working. At a time when home internet access was far less common in Indonesia, those long hours online gave him a close look at what the web could do.

He learned by using it.

He searched. He read. He watched.

Basically, the internet became another classroom.

William later joked that he could say he had earned a degree from an internet café.

That experience helped shape his career.

Life After University

William graduated in 2003.

He wanted to work in technology.

His early career included software and internet-related work. He spent several years learning how technology businesses operated before becoming a founder himself.

There was no instant startup success.

Actually, it came slowly.

By 2007, William had spotted what he believed was a real problem in Indonesia.

The country was huge. Buyers and sellers were spread across thousands of islands. Online transactions also faced a trust problem.

A marketplace could help.

The idea sounded simple. Building it wasn’t.

William Tanuwijaya and the Start of Tokopedia

William began working on the Tokopedia idea with Leontinus Alpha Edison.

Their aim was to build a trusted online marketplace where Indonesian buyers and sellers could meet.

William had the idea.

He did not have the money.

That became his next problem.

From roughly 2007 to 2009, William tried to persuade investors to back the business. He approached people through his existing professional network.

Rejection came repeatedly.

Potential investors questioned the idea. Indonesia’s internet economy was still young, and William did not come from a wealthy family with a long business history.

Still, he kept pitching.

For about two years.

Tokopedia eventually secured backing and moved ahead. The marketplace publicly launched on 17 August 2009, Indonesia’s Independence Day. SoftBank’s later corporate records confirm that launch date.

Why Tokopedia Was Different

Tokopedia was built as a marketplace.

It did not need to own every product.

Instead, sellers could open stores and reach buyers online.

That opened another door.

Small merchants could start selling beyond their immediate town or neighbourhood. Customers could find products from sellers they might never meet in person.

The idea fitted Indonesia well.

Distance had always mattered.

Technology could reduce that distance.

For William, this was connected to his own experience growing up outside Jakarta. He understood the difference between having access and missing out because of location.

That was a real problem.

Tokopedia tried to help fix it.

Early Investors

Investor support started building after launch.

SoftBank’s records show an early funding history that included:

  • PT Indonusa Dwitama in 2009
  • East Ventures in 2010
  • CyberAgent Ventures in 2011
  • BEENOS in 2012
  • SB Pan Asia Fund in 2013

Then came a much bigger deal.

In October 2014, SoftBank Internet and Media and Sequoia Capital announced a US$100 million investment in Tokopedia.

For William and Tokopedia, this was a major step.

The company now had backing from internationally known technology investors and much more capital to grow its operations.

Tokopedia Becomes a Major Indonesian Tech Company

Tokopedia grew from a startup into one of Indonesia’s biggest online marketplaces.

More merchants joined.

More customers followed.

The company expanded its technology, payments, merchant services and logistics partnerships while keeping its marketplace model at the centre of the business.

William remained closely associated with Tokopedia throughout this period.

He served as its co-founder and chief executive for many years, becoming one of the most recognisable startup founders in Indonesia.

The story also helped change perceptions.

A founder from Pematangsiantar had built a company capable of attracting major international investment.

That mattered to Indonesia’s startup community.

Tokopedia and Gojek Form GoTo

A major change came in May 2021.

Gojek and Tokopedia announced that they were combining their businesses to create GoTo Group.

The deal brought together e-commerce, transport, food delivery, logistics, payments and financial services.

William stayed as Tokopedia CEO.

GoTo’s announcement said its combined businesses had recorded more than US$22 billion in gross transaction value during 2020, with more than 100 million monthly active users and over 11 million merchant partners across the group.

This was much bigger now.

William was no longer simply leading a standalone marketplace. Tokopedia had become part of a large Indonesian technology group.

GoTo’s Stock Market Listing

GoTo reached another milestone in April 2022.

The company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange under the stock code GOTO.

GoTo said its IPO process raised around US$1.1 billion, with an estimated market capitalisation of about US$28 billion at listing.

The listing happened on 11 April 2022.

For William, it marked another stage in a business story that had started with repeated investor rejection years earlier.

Leaving the Tokopedia CEO Role

William’s role changed in 2023.

GoTo announced that he would leave his day-to-day executive responsibilities at Tokopedia.

He had spent years running the company.

Now his focus shifted.

William remained involved at group level as a GoTo Commissioner and Co-Chairman while moving away from daily Tokopedia management.

His professional record lists his Tokopedia CEO period as ending in March 2023, followed by a period as Tokopedia Chairman.

That chairman role lasted until June 2024. His GoTo Co-Chairman role also ended in June 2024.

What Is William Tanuwijaya Doing Now?

William became much less visible in day-to-day corporate management after leaving his Tokopedia and GoTo leadership positions.

One confirmed activity is startup investing.

In 2025, AI startup Bythen announced a US$5 million seed round and named William Tanuwijaya among its angel investors.

That puts him on another side of the startup table.

Years earlier, he had spent two years searching for investors.

Now he has backed another founder.

Public information reviewed for this article does not establish a new full-time corporate executive position after his 2024 departure from Tokopedia and GoTo, so it would be inaccurate to describe him as Tokopedia’s current CEO or chairman.

Awards and Recognition

William has received several recognised business honours.

In 2016, he joined the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders community.

World Economic Forum records identify William Tanuwijaya as a Young Global Leader representing Indonesia and Tokopedia.

Another major award followed in 2019.

EY lists William Tanuwijaya of PT Tokopedia as the EY Indonesia Entrepreneur Of The Year 2019 winner.

His public professional profile also lists the Satyalancana Wira Karya honour from the President of Indonesia in 2019 and Forbes Indonesia’s Businessman of the Year recognition in 2020.

William Tanuwijaya’s Leadership Story

William’s career has several clear patterns.

He started without major capital.

He learned through work.

He faced rejection.

Then he kept trying.

His experience also shows how much timing matters. Indonesia’s internet market was still developing when he began pitching Tokopedia.

That made fundraising harder.

But it also created room.

A large country needed better ways for buyers and sellers to connect online. Tokopedia helped fill that gap as internet adoption grew.

William stayed with that idea for years.

The scale eventually changed.

The root idea did not.

Is William Tanuwijaya a Billionaire?

There is no reliable, independently verified current personal net-worth figure that should be presented as fact.

This matters.

Startup valuations are not personal wealth.

Neither are headline funding rounds.

William has held shares connected with GoTo, but calculating someone’s net worth requires much more information, including current holdings, sale history, private investments, liabilities and other assets.

Most websites publishing exact figures do not show enough evidence.

So a responsible profile should avoid guessing.

Personal Life

William keeps much of his personal life away from his business story.

His own public professional profile describes him as a father and husband, but detailed information about his family is not needed to understand his work.

That information should stay private unless clearly shared through reliable public sources.

His career record is enough.

Final Thought

William Tanuwijaya’s career began quietly.

No famous business family. No instant funding.

He studied computing, worked difficult night shifts and spent years trying to convince investors that an Indonesian online marketplace could work.

Tokopedia eventually answered that question.

The company grew into one of Indonesia’s best-known technology businesses, joined Gojek to create GoTo, and later reached the Indonesian stock market.

William is no longer Tokopedia’s CEO.

That detail matters today.

Still, his connection to the company remains permanent. He was one of the people who started it, stayed through its long growth period and helped take the idea from a difficult pitch to a business used across Indonesia.
